One of the primary themes of The Land I Lost is courage, particularly that of its author. Quang Nhuong Huynh as he grew up in Vietnam, were he frequently faced terrifying challenges, such as fighting off a jungle tiger. This feat made others seek his help in protecting their livestock. Later, Huynh was wounded during the Vietnam War. Huyunh first had to use courage to heal. He then had to be courageous in order to leave the only home he had ever known to travel to the United States
