Hermia is in love with Lysander, but her father believes that Lysander bewitched her into falling in love with him.  At the beginning of the play, Hermia's father brings her to see Theseus so he may enforce the law that states Hermia must obey her father in choosing a husband.  If she disobeys she may be sent to a nunnery or sentenced to death.  Hermia's father has chosen Demetrius to be her husband but she is not interested and decides to run away with Lysander.

In the middle of the play, Lysander falls under a spell after Puck puts a potion in his eye while he's sleeping.  The spell forces him to fall in love with the first person he sees upon opening his eyes.  Helena comes upon Lysander sleeping in the woods and awakens him, causing him to immediately fall in love with her.  When Hermia finds out she accuses Helena of stealing Lysander's love.  All the miscommunication and misunderstanding causes argument among the characters.  Eventually Oberon orders Puck to put everyone to sleep and restore their orignal feelings upon awakening.  By the end of the play Hermia and Lysander finally are allowed to get married because Demetrius has fallen in love with Helena and no longer wishes to marry Hermia.
