One thing to think about is that the "least restrictive environment" required by the IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Act) turns out to be the most psychologically restrictive environment for the student or the group of students the requirement is being applied to. If a sense of psychological restriction develops, this can manifest in anger and intentional disregard for learning. For example, when students are assigned to the least restrictive environment that is a set of isolated bungalows removed from the central school buildings, this can label, mark, ostracize the students with disabilities and cause detrimental psychological, emotional, and motivational constriction.
