The pardoner is one of Chaucer's unsympathetic characters. At the time in Europe, the Catholic Church raised funds by allowing "generous" believers to contribute to the church, especially for building purposes. Many pardoners overstepped their mission and encouraged the purchase of indulgences which would allow people to bypass Purgatory and enter Heaven directly.
