The heart is located in the center of the chest between the lungs, although due to its shape a large portion of the heart is left of center. It is approximately the size of an adult fist.
The left side of the heart is thicker than the right and pumps blood, rich in oxygen and nutrients.
The right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs first so that it can pick up oxygen to be pumped to the rest of the body via the left side of the heart.
Blood is pumped at high pressure so it can reach all the body's parts. For this to happen, the aorta has to be very thick and needs a very good oxygen supply.
