I am not sure I understand your question.  There aren't many short term causes of pregnancy (teenage or adult).  There are societal influence, parental, and self.  Pregnancy takes place in moments, often with no feeling until days after a child is conceived.

The long term effect is a new life that needs more than basic care, the child will need to be loved.

As a Health Teacher, there are several factors that I talk about that lead to teen pregnancy.

-There is a great deal of emotion flowing inside teens, along with hormones that demand attention.  Girls, as well as boys, discover that they are attracted and attractive to the opposite sex and they like the attention.  Naturally, many will explore by having sex before they understand the serious responsibility that goes with it.

-A lack of education about reproduction and pregnancy.  Teens don't understand the facts of sexual reproduction.

-Alcohol use, when teens drink, their inhibitions are suppressed and they might have unprotected sex which will lead to pregnancy.  They get caught up in the moment.

-A need for acceptance by peers, or peer pressure, everyone else is having sex, so some teens engage in sexual behavior very unprepared for the consequences.

Lust, lack of self esteem and the ability to say "no", lack of respect for others, substance abuse which muddies the waters of clear thinking, wanting to be accepted or popular, misconceptions about sexual intercourse (you can't get pregnant your first time), lack of healthy activities for teens.

More than anything is a lack of healthy open communication with the parents.  When parents are closed off from their children whether they are scrict or leinant, that is basically neglect of their child.  Once a child is neglected, they search for guidance and attention elsewhere, and for a developed young female that can lead to sex.

Are you asking about the short term effects of teenage pregnancy? If so, there are a lot of them.A teenager is often not prepared for the changes that happen when you become pregnant. Often times, as an adult we are still at a loss when we become pregnant. The hormonal changes that happen, are beyond your control. The changes in your body as well. Many times teenagers are trying to stay very thin. They do not accept the fact that they must gain weight in order to have a healthy pregnancy. Also, their bodies are just not ready for that extra weight or the changes that are going to occur. Also, the peer ridicule that may come along with getting pregnant. That just puts more stress on the teenager that is pregnant. The last thing that I can think of is the simple fact of deciding what they are going to do with the baby. Are they going to keep it and raise it as a single mom? Get married? Put it up for adoption?

The biggest short-term CAUSE of teenage pregnancy that I witnessed at the high school I attended back in the day was the idea that it was "cool". A girl with whom I used to be close to in grade school ended up pregnant and her best friend at the time actively tried to get pregnant (and succeeded) so their children "could grow up and be friends with each other". Even at that age I thought it to be completely absurd, but they didn't get the memo. At my high school though, we had a day-care for the kids of the students who went there so at least the mothers could stay in school.

At the high school where I teach now, there has only been one pregnant girl and although the students rallied to help her out, she has been looked at a lot differently since then. It all depends who it is that is becoming pregnant and how the student body feels about teenage pregnancy. Whose to say that in five years another girl won't get pregnant at my school and that will be a catalyst. There is the saying that "pregnancy is contagious" so that could be one of the short-term causes as well.

I'm a bit shocked that no-one has mentioned the OBVIOUS short-term reason for teen-age pregnancy. I can see lots of talk about 'Teenagers get pregnant because of drink and drugs' and 'Teenagers get pregnant because of lack of self-esteem' but no-one has mentioned the clearest, simplest fact... Teenagers get pregnant because teenagers have sex without a condom.

During unprotected sexual intercourse; upon orgasm, the penis ejaculates semen directly into the vagina, leading to possible fertilisation of the egg, depending on the female's 'period' cycle.

But using a condom provides a physical barrier between the penis and the vagina, preventing the transfer of semen and thus eliminating the possibility of pregnancy.

As far as I can see, that is the only 'short term' reason for teenage pregnancy.

the main causes to pregnancy are the fact that girls who are teenagers feel that pressure to lose there virginity at quite a young age to 'fit in' with there peers.

the main causes to pregnancy are the fact that girls who are teenagers feel that pressure to lose there virginity at quite a young age to 'fit in' with there peers.

So Jenny has sex because all her friends have sex. And all Jenny's friends have sex because, in simple terms, Jenny has sex? And they all do this just to 'fit in'.

You don't think there's any chance that they have sex because their young healthy bodies (which naughty Mother Nature has made ready for reproduction without first consulting the US government or Christian pressure groups) are responding to the fabulous pleasure and electric desire of physical contact?

Teenagers, like adults, have sexual urges, and, just like adults, those urges often over-ride common sense and conventional morality. (in facts, teenagers' surging hormones are stronger than older peoples')

Didn't anybody here go 'a bit too far' one night simply because it was too wonderful and too exciting to stop? You will not prevent teenagers from being attracted to each other (like super-powerful magnets) Demonising sex and trying to switch their urges off is cruel and ineefective. Try to remember just how powerful and irresistible those first caresses were. That 'silver ring thing' is a nasty nasty little trick to play on nervous young people.

Teenagers will have sex. We all did. Give them condoms.
