The journal starts when Catherine is "13 years, 6 months, 29 days" old and living in New Hampshire in the Northeast sector of the United States. According to her statement to the recipient of the journal, the journal follows the day by day events of her fourteenth and fifteenth years of age between 1830 and 1832. She is involved in slave escapes and other early American adventures including his father's remarriage and the death of her best friend.
