You asked about details. I think it's easy to get carried away with the supernatural elements of the crime. However it is just as important that the story is basically about love. Love transcends death. Usually it has a figurative meaning, but here it's literal!

Susie thinks it strange but fitting that two girls who are outsiders should come together from their places in life and death. The initial "meeting" between the two girls is important because it sets up the major out-of-body experience that will occur later in the novel when Susie's spirit completely takes over Ruth's body to have her first kiss with Ray. So, you might consider creating the scene of Ruth feeling the shiver when Susie's spirit is near her. The photo album might include images of Susie and Ruth in their separate lives before Susie's death, and a merging of these photos as the girls finally make a connection.
