Traditionally, women's roles in this time were strictly defined by their husbands.Janie's role is to find herself. Her role changes as she gets older. With Logan, it was expected she would be a proper wife, to live her life as a work partner for her husband. This did not satisfy Janie. Janie's next husband, Joe Starks, expected her to be an attractive accessory in his life. Her third, TeaCake, let her be whoever she decided she wanted to be.
