Daedelus is commonly known as the artificer, or architect. When reading the novel, consider the protagonist of the work, Stephan Deadalus, as the person who needs/wants to develop his artistics skills but is limited by the constraints of his country's politics, religion, and culture. Ultimately, Stephan's goal is to leave Ireland, but he needs to somehow navigate the "labyrinth" of his life
