Rainsford, the protagonist, is a hunter by profession and he is world renowned at hunting the world's most cunning game. He loves his job at the beginning. He is on his yacht sailing through the Caribbean when his friend Whitney begins to contemplate the feelings of the game that they hunt. Whitney wonders whether or not the hunted feel fear or pain. Rainsford believes that the world is made up of two classes, the hunted and the huntees. He expresses to Whitney that it's ridiculous to think that the huntees have feelings about being hunted.
