As a small business owner, the first organizations you should join to develop local business contacts are the local and regional Chambers of Commerce. They are voluntary business associations dedicated to promoting local and regional businesses and host many useful events for businesspeople, most often oriented towards small business, which are quite useful for networking. Facebook is generally useful for social networking and you should have a Facebook page for your business. LinkedIn is oriented towards professional networking. If you are  a woman, you might look at local or national women's professional orgaizations; there are also networks for specific minorities. Social events at your local place of worship (mosque, church, temple, etc.), if you are religious,  can offer many potential business contacts.
