Of Mice and Men is about two men who travel together, protecting each other, until one of them accidentally kills a woman and the other is forced to kill him.
The novel takes place from Thursday to Sunday, sometime in the 1930s, near Soledad, California. Two men travel around together. George is the smaller of the two, but he is the leader because he is more intelligent. Lennie is huge, but mentally challenged. George looks out for him, making sure that they get work and Lennie does not get into too much trouble.
George and Lennie have been run out of Weed when Lennie tried to touch a girl’s dress.
"Jus' wanted to feel that girl's dress- jus' wanted to pet it like it was a mouse- Well, how the hell did she know you jus' wanted to feel her dress? (ch 1)
They are headed to a new ranch, where George tells the boss that Lennie is his cousin and though he doesn’t talk much, he is strong. They get the job and soon run into trouble with the boss’s son, Curley, and his flirtatious wife.
Lennie, who likes soft things, accidentally kills a puppy while stroking it. He tries to hide the puppy, but Curley’s wife is lonely and comes to talk to him. He thinks her hair is soft and tries to touch it, breaking her neck. George has to shoot Lennie to save him from being arrested.
