Margaret Landon's book, Anna and the King of Siam, and the musical version of the story, presented as a play and a movie under the title "The King and I," are both based on the story of Anna Leonowens and her adventures as the teacher for the king's children in the royal court of Siam.
Anna deals with cultural differences regarding the proper role of women in the court and in the country; with different expectations regarding the roles of wives and husbands; and with the challenges of working for an employer who expects all to obey him instantly. As time goes by, the vast differences in cultural perceptions and understandings between Anna and the king narrow somewhat; by helping the king's children learn to think in new ways, Anna is able to help bring about significant changes in the way the prince governs the country when his father dies and he becomes the King of Siam.
