A rainbow is composed of the entire spectrum of colors of visible light, from the longest wavelength, red, to the shortest wavelength, violet. The order of colors in a rainbow is easiest to remember by the following mnemonic (a formula that helps one remember something): ROY G. BIV. R=red, O=orange, Y=yellow, G=green, B=blue, I = indigo, and V=violet. Red is at the top edge of the rainbow and violet is at the bottom edge, with the other colors in between.

Rainbows are created both by reflection and refraction (bending) of sunlight in raindrops. As sunlight enters a raindrop, it bends and it is separated into its constituent colors (the colors that comprise white light [ROY G. BIV]. Some of the light—that which travels at a "critical" angle—is reflected off the back of the raindrop. (A "critical" angle is the angle at which sunlight must strike the back of the raindrop, in order to be reflected back to the front of the drop.) Each color strikes the back of the raindrop at a slightly different angle, thus each color emerges from the front of the raindrop at a slightly different angle.

Only one color exits from each raindrop at the exact angle necessary to reach the observer's eye. An observer sees only one color at a time reflecting from each raindrop. For this reason, it takes millions of raindrops to create a rainbow.

A rainbow is made by the reflection and refraction of light that interacts with raindrops.  Depending on how this interaction occurs with your location relative to the sun and the raindrops you may see a primary and even a secondary rainbow.

The interaction that occurs to create the primary rainbow will produce a spectrum of colors in order Red - Orange - Yellow - Green - Blue - Indigo -Violet (ROY G BIV) with Red occuring on the outside edge of the rainbow to Violet occuring on the insdie edge (closest to the center) of the rainbow.

The extra reflection that occurs to produce the secondary rainbow causes the colors to reverse order.  So on the secondary rainbow Red will occur on the inside edge followed by Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, then Violet on the outside edge of the secondary rainbow.

Check the sites below if you want to see a little more detail on how this works.

Isaac Newton, to whom we owe a great deal of gratitude for his pioneering work on what light is and how colors combine to make the rainbow, summarized it as you have seen in other answers to this questions: Red -- Orange -- Yellow -- Green -- Blue -- Indigo -- and Violet.  However this can be a little misleading for two reasons.

1. There are actually many more colors in the rainbow than we have names for.  Our eyes are capable of distinguishing millions of individual shades of color!

2. When we think about the rainbow in the ROYGBIV colors, we usually make a mistake.  What many people call "blue" in the rainbow is actually cyan, you know, like what you use in your color printer.  Cyan stimulates the parts of our eye that see green and blue equally.  Your computer monitor that you are looking at right now produces cyan by combining equal light levels of green and blue as well.  The actual pure blue, is what Newton unfortunately referred to as "indigo."  So in terms of what colors are actually there, a more accurate summary of the rainbow would be Red -- Orange -- Yellow -- Green -- Cyan -- Blue -- Violet

The rainbow have 7 colours which are visible to human sight . But this colours can b mixed to give other complementary colours and secondary colours. Using this as a remembrance ROYGBIV meaning R=red which have the strongest wave lenght. O=Orange, Y=yellow, G=green , also have a stronger wavelength, B=blue, I=indigo, V=violet. Note that Blue, red and yellow are primary colours while the rest are either secondary, intermediate or complementary colours

I learned ROY G BIV as well:

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet

They are seen in a rainbow (the result of white light refracting off water droplets) or from light traveling through a prism. Red has the longest wavelength while violet has the shortest.

All you need to remember is this: ROY G BIV (or ROYGBIV). These letters stand for the order of the colors of the rainbow, which are: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet.

Another way to remember the order of the colors of the rainbow is to recite the phrase Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain.

This is an easy answer. Part of becoming a student of any discipline is learning the most efficient way of gathering information. This format doesn't use your time wisely. With that said, did you need those in order and did you need an explanation of rainbows specifically.  If not, then your answer is violet, indego, blue, green, orange, red.

The colors are easily memorized with the neumonic aid: "Roy-G Biv"  It is scientifically explained as the result of refraction of the pure white light entering the Earth's atmosphere and being "bent" into it's components.  It is important to understand that we are discussing only visible light- or rather light visible to the regular human eye.  It is all based on the wavelength of the individual rays of light.  THe rays are infinite as are rays of each of the "bands of wavelenghts of light.

From  lowest energy to highest energy they are:

Red

Orange

Yellow

Green

Blue

Indigo

Violet

Naturally as the waves are lower energy than red they are called infrared (think of an infrared heater) and higher energy than violet- yes you guessed it- ultraviolet.

Culturally, politically, and religiously the colors mean many different things:

God's promise to man

A colatition of human kind

the gay flag

A path over which lies a fabulus place or a pot of gold!

Rainbow occurs because that sunlight is refracted and reflected in drops of water (rain or fog), floating in the atmosphere. These droplets differently deflect light in different colors (the refractive index of water for a long-wavelength (red) light is less than for the short (purple), so the weakest rejected red light - 137 ° 30 ', and most of all purple - 139 ° 20 '). As a result, the white light into a spectrum (there is dispersion of light). The observer, who stands with his back to the light, sees a colorful glow that emanates from the space in concentric circles (arcs).

 also learnt as 'VIBGYOR'

V : Violet

I : Indigo

B : Blue

G : Green

Y : Yellow

O : Orange

R : Red

VIBGYOR: This is the easiest way to remember.

Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red.

You must remember though that red is the longest wavelength in the visible spectrum and appears at the top of rainbows and to the left-hand side on a  horizontal wavelength spectrum while violet is the shortest wavelength in the visible spectrum and appears on the bottom of rainbows and to the right-hand side on a horizontal wavelength spectrum. So, reading left to right, the order of the colors is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet:

ROYGBIV

These are the seven colours on the visible spectrum. Beyond violet are the ultraviolet rays and before red are the infrared rays.

The order of the rainbow is ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet). It is caused by a breakup of white light wavelenght (all colors) when it hits water. It is refracted as it passes through the water droplets in the sky (moisture after rain) and breaks into 7 different sizes of wavelenghts. The largest of the color wavelenght is Red and the smallest is Violet. They have the different sizes due to the amount of energy they come with as they travel from the sun to our eyes!

Then, when I got into high school, my biology teacher taught us about light and that when light hits a prism, the light is being dispersed into ROYGBIV. In other words, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Technically speaking, the light that comes from the sun is white, but since it hits water (or rain)...

The order of the colors goes as follows:

1. Red

2. Orange

3. Yellow

4. Green

5. Blue

6. Purple or violet

Many people argue that pink is also a color of the rainbow, and that it comes right purple (or violet).

Actually, there are many mistakes in what we generally think the colours are. Issac Newton called what we know call cyan, blue, and what we call blue, as violet, as in 'roses are red, violets are... blue.' And, while Indigo IS in a rainbow, it is really a shade of blue, and was only added so there was 7 colours as there is 7 musical notes. Also to make note, if there appears to be violet in a rainbow you see, that's because you're viewing an account where one of the generally unviewable inner circle's red's has overlapped with the outer ring's blue. And finally, these are the BASE colours- technically there's thousands in the rainbow.

See the image? Look, no violet.

It takes the form of a multicoloured arc, with red on the outside and violet on the inside. Even though a rainbow spans a continuous spectrum of colours, traditionally the full sequence of colours is most commonly cited as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. It is commonly thought that indigo was included due to the different religious connotations of the numbers six and seven at the time of Isaac Newton's work on light, despite its lack of scientific significance and the poor ability of humans to distinguish colours in the blue portion of the visual spectrum.
