What number is 16 more than its opposite?

Let "the number" be represented by the variable x.

The opposite of `x` is `-x` .

Since the number is 16 more than its opposite, we can add 16 to the opposite to make them equal to give the equation:

`x = -x + 16` Solve by adding x to each side.

`x + x = -x + x + 16`

`2x = 16` Divide  both sides by 2.

`x = 8`

The number 8 is 16 more than it's opposite, -8.

The solution is 8.

8+8=16
