There are several characteristics:

The anguish throughout the story from needing the fire

The frustration trying to get it going

The desperation of making it happen

The resignation at the end that "nature had its way"

The ending- what starts negative, ends negative

The fight against nature's force and the subsequent defeat under dire circumstances.
