The hyoid bone anchors the tongue, it is located in the posterior pharynx. You have a axial skeletal system and a appendicular skeletal system. The hyoid bone is a part of the axial skeletal system(bones that are more medial). The hyoid bone is non-articulating, it does not communicate with any other bone. Almost all other bones in your body form joints or articulations, an area where two or more bones meet and form a joint. The hyoid is commonly injured due to blunt force trauma, like for example, an injury received from a crushing force like an automobile accident.

The bone in humans at the back of tongue is called hyoid bone or lingual bone. It is a horse shoe shaped bone situated at the root of the tongue in front of neck between lower jaw and the largest cartilage of the larynx. It serves as an anchoring structure for the tongue. It also provides attachment to the muscles of the floor of the mouth and the tongue above. This is the only bone in human body which is not connected to any other bone. Thus it has a purely anchoring function. Unlike other bones it does not serve as a frame to give shape to the body and facilitate movement of parts of the body.
