The mood or tone of the story is a complex mixture of macabre nostalgia and ambiguous regret. The collective narrator expresses some sense of responsibility, albeit in a distant fashion. There is a  perverse but familiar quality to the narrators reaction to the interpreted suicide attempt by Emily.
