According to the Oxford Dictionary, when you transliterate something, you write it by using the approximate corresponding letters of a different alphabet or language. For example, many names are often transliterated from one language into another. This sort of translation can be contrasted with semantic translation, which tries to use semantic elements of different languages in order to find the right word in the other language that will have as close of a meaning as possible.
