Three parts of the cochlear implant are the transmitter, the receiver and the electrode array. The transmitter is comprised mostly of plastic and some metal, the receiver is actually a small computer and is constructed of the same material that most chips are made of, silicon, usually some metals including gold or other very effective conductors to make a reliable processor for a small chip.
The electrode array is actually composed of silicon rubber and a very effective conductor such as platinum or other very effective material. The integrity of these parts is very important as they are inserted deeper into the skull close to the cochlea.
