Panama is a country that does not have a very developed manufacturing sector. It also is not particularly rich in natural resources. Panama’s major source of income, making up more than 3/4s of its Gross Domestic Product, is services. These services center around the shipping that transits the Panama Canal. Therefore, the country has to import a large amount of various essentials.
The major imports of Panama are manufactured goods. It imports vehicles as it does not have an auto industry. It imports cell phones and other electronics. It imports iron and steel. It imports medicines. In addition, like every other economy, Panama needs fuel, which is another commodity which it must import.
Panama imports, then, a variety of manufactured goods and the fuel that runs its economy.
