Olivia and Daniel Smith are the adoptive white parents to an Indian boy, John. They treat him well, and love and care for him as any parents would care for their child. They are very happy to be John's adoptive parents. All and all, they are very good parents. Throughout the novel they do their best to help John grow up cultivating his Indian heritage, but despite their best efforts John still struggles with his identity, struggling most with figuring out to which tribe he belongs. He feels lost between two worlds, having no sense of belonging to either.
