What keeps people from being themselves?

High School Teacher
In modern society many factors contribute to they way people present themselves. In Sherman Alexie's novel, the main character is Junior. He faces many difficulties in his life. We see other characters struggling with the same issue of identity that Junior struggles with. Rowdy also struggles with his identity. To answer the question of what keeps people from being themselves, we must understand that many people do not even know who they are. They are searching for their own personal identity. Many people are also like Junior and try to adapt to their surroundings. They conform so they can fit in with others and not feel like an outcast. Societies expectations often hinder us from being who we truly are.
