What are the effects of excess or lack of fluid intake on the human body?

Everyday, your body loses water everytime you urinate, sweat, have a bowel movement or exhale. Therefore, it is recommended that men take about 13 cups and women 9 cups of total beverages per day to replenish the water that is lost. Water makes up 60% of the body weight. All systems in the body rely on water, which is the universal solvent. Lack of water is known as dehydration and this can leave you tired and feeling low on energy. Overhydration can cause the electrolytes in the body to be out of balance. Water intoxication can cause cells in the brain to swell, causing personality changes, confusion, irritability and drowsiness. Edema in the brain can result in seizures, damage, coma or death.
