Government was created to protect our rights. Our rights are not granted by the government. In fact, our Bill of Rights was added to the US Constitution to protect us from government infringement of our rights.
Through the two concepts of "due process" and "equal protection" (both found in the 14th Amendment), the government ensures that our rights are not violated by anyone whether that be government, private corporations, organizations, etc.
