This inability in part falls under basic gross motor skills development. Assessment for basic gross motor skills is deemed crucial for education. Five areas are covered in gross motor skill assessment:

  • balance
  • bilateral coordination
  • upper extremity coordination
  • visual motor control
  • and upper extremity speed and dexterity

Fine motor skills must be assesed as well, but the starting point is gross motor skills. One strategy is to employ various objects, like a school ball, and physical skills, like balancing on one foot, to assess gross motor skill development.
