Global warming is the theory that climate change is currently occurring due to the production of "greenhouse gases." These gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, are byproducts of industrial civilization. They trap the sun's heat as the windows of a greenhouse do; they allow visible light to pass through, but block infrared light's escape. Cars, factories, and power plants generate these gases at a pace beyond the rate at which they can be re-absorbed by the oceans and /or processed by plants. Industrial civilization also generates heat directly. At the same time, deforestation contributes through decreasing the biosphere's ability to transform CO2 to oxygen. The result is a potential tragic spiral.
