Four expectations that may distort perception include a suspect's prior record, previous encounters with the suspect, whether the officer has caught the perpertrator in a lie, thus clouding his or her perception of further statements, and finally, personal prejudices the officer may have, whether he or she is overtly aware of those prejudices or not.
