I suppose that the obvious answer is "shopping."  That is the first word that comes to mind because for me at least, the two words pretty much go together.

After that obvious answer, the first word that comes to mind is "excess."  When I picture a mall (we are too small of a town to actually have one so I rarely go in them), I picture all sorts of shops that are selling things that you don't really need.  I picture huge Christmas decoration displays (even though it is not yet Thanksgiving).  So I sort of associate malls with the excesses of American consumerism.  You can see a very religious take on that idea in the objectiveministries.org link and an article about how the recession has reduced that in the other link.

A mall is a convenient place to do comparison shopping or to complete shopping for a variety of different items.  If I am looking for new winter boots, I will likely have two or three "anchor" stores (large department stores) to check, but I will also have several smaller retailers whose sole (no pun intended) purpose is shoes.  In the larger store I may get more variety of brands and perhaps better sales, but the smaller stores usually provide more attentive service and a more knowledgeable staff -- especially in regard to the fewer number of brands they may carry.

On the same day I buy those boots, I could also buy new towels, a pretty dress for a party, a couple of new candles, and a new cell phone -- all with only one parking spot!

I am actually a big believer in supporting the local business owners, the "small guys on the block," but I also know that the big mall is life saver when I am busy and have a long list.

The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of the word mall is fun. I personally love to go the mall, especially if I have extra money to spend. With that being said, I also think of credit cards and debt when I think of the mall. It is an easy place to go spend excessive amounts of money and run up some hefty credit cards bills.

After visiting Washington, D. C., one may conjure the National Mall there which consists of the grassy area and the Washington monument, Lincoln monument, Martin Luther King memorial and other sites.

I'm not a huge mall fan, and HUGE malls are not fun for me in any way.  I think immediately of The Mall of America, and I find nothing fun about it.  The parking is a nightmare, it's loud, I don't know where things are...and about a hundred other reasons.  I'm sure I could get what I needed or wanted there, but doing so makes me crazy.  Not a fan of mega-malls.

The first thing that comes to my mind is not a word, but a feeling. A feeling of very bright lighting and massive sensory overload. (btw... pretty much the only place where my well-tempered little toddler throws full-scale tantrums is the mall. - that speaks volumes to me about the psychology of these places)

The first two things that come to mind for me are crowded and money. It seems that any time I am in a Mall it is too crowded and everything is usually too expensive.

The first that comes to my mind is shopping with friends! Also I think about stores like Abercrombie and Hollister.
