Most of it shows Amir's guilt

Amir and Hassan have been spending the first twelve years of their lives together. “I spend most of the first twelve years of my life playing with Hassan” (Husseini, 27).They used to chase each other between tangles of trees in my father’s yard, playing hide-and-seek, cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians. Even though Amir and Hassan have been playing together through all of these years, but Amir is always dishonest and disloyal. Amir is always jealous of the way Hassan is treated by his dad, and how his dad buys him a lot of valuable gifts for his birthdays. So, Amir starts hating Hassan more because of the better life he has. One day, Amir watches Hassan getting raped by Assef and he does not do anything about it. “I watched Hassan get raped … I understood the nature of my new curse: I was going to get away with it.”(Husseini, #). This quote shows how Amir is admitting watching Hassan gets raped without doing anything, and how he thinks he is going to get away with it. Due to all the betraying moves Amir has done to Hassan; they both end up into two separate paths. In the end, I was a Pashtun and he was a Hazara, I was Sunni and he was Shi’a…” (Husseini, #). However, Amir and Hassan never get to meet again, this solid choice he made, changes his life forever. Amir travels to America, and starts realizing how bad the choices he makes when he is younger affect him for life. Amir cannot stop getting the periodic flashbacks of the things he has done to Hassan back in the day, especially, the day when Hassan gets raped by Assef. Amir starts feeling guilty about all the times he has betrayed Hassan. Amir tries to hide his emotions and escape from all the guilt he feels but he cannot. “…it’s wrong what they say about the past, I’ve learned, about how you can bury it. Because the past claws its way out”. Amir meets Soraya and starts liking her. So, Amir thinks that getting married and starting a new life would help him to forget about all what happened in the past. He marries Soraya and starts getting used to his new life. Rahim Khan phones Amir in the June of 2001 and all the guilt floods back again in Amir’s heart. Now, Amir knows that all his plans are not going to work. He feels that he must suffer some kind of punishment in order to be free of his guilt. “I wished Hassan would give it back to me, break open the door and tell me off it would have made things easier” (Husseini, #). At first he tries to make Hassan get revenge from him by provoking Hassan to throw Pomegranates at him. This plane for sure fails again. Hassan shows his good side as always and instead of exacting revenge on Amir he takes the Pomegranates and smashes it on his own head which only deepens the guilt in Amir’s heart.
