High School Teacher
Like Bigger Thomas, Richard Wright moved to Chicago from the Mississippi Delta area as a young child with his family. And like Bigger Thomas, Wright's father had little to no role in his life.
The Wright family struggled to make a living and survive in small, one room apartments in the Black Belt of Chicago where racism was encountered each and every day. Jobs were few, educational opportunities were rare, and it was very difficult to improve one's life and find success. Unlike Bigger, Richard Wright was able to do just that.
I'd encourage you to read the essay "How Bigger Was Born" in which Richard Wright explains all of these facts in more detail. The essay is included at the back of most editions of Native Son.
