What should we do to increase voter turnout?

The one thing that I think we should do to increase voter turnout is to have our elections be held on weekends. Alternatively, we could have each election day be a holiday. Finally, we could do like my state (Washington) does and have vote by mail. All of these steps would make it more convenient for people to vote. It is very difficult for some people to vote because they have to make it down to their polling place, stand in line, and vote. This can take a long time and not everyone is able to simply leave work for as long as they like to go and vote. This would make it easier for everyone to find the time to vote and would be likely to increase turnout.
