When all the guests come downstairs for breakfast their first morning together, Vera notices something different about the indian figures that were on the mantlepiece. She reminds Lombard that the night before, there had been 9 figures on the mantle and that they had discovered a broken one, meaning that there had been 10 in all. However, now there are only 8 figures on the mantle. Vera wonders what could have happened to the 9th figure, but Lombard says they must have just assumed there were 10 because of the familiar rhyme. Just at that moment, Dr. Armstrong announces that Mrs. Rogers is dead.
