What does the trapped bird in the house symbolize in The Bean trees?
Thank You soooo much for any help

It represents Turtle - most of the references to birds throughout the book represent Turtle. Virgie thinks the bird dead at first as it comes down the chimney, but it survives, just barely. Similarly, Turtle has just been nearly frightened to death and taken away at that time, but she barely manages to survive as well. The fact that the bird survived symbolizes that Turtle will survive as well.
