Emily Wilcox (really Emily Baxter) writes feminist poetry. She decides to run away to New York City and then on to Paris because her husband does *not* like what she writes so much so that he decides to have her commited to an insane asylum. Remember, the book is set in a time where women, especially married women, have no rights and husbands are allowed to whatever they deem necessary to "keep their wives in line" if they are somehow "bad".
