Lewis B. Smedes was a Christian writer who studied forgiveness.  The above quote is from the Bible and admonishes the followers of Jesus to love each other as they have been loved without reservations by the Son of God.  In other words, you can't pick and choose who you will love in the Christian sense of the word; Smedes is also telling us that as God's love is unconditional, we too must love with all we have.  Smedes is a very Christian writer, and his studies of forgiveness are referenced by many as definitive work in the art of forgiving. If we can forgive people, we can also love them.
