In African American history, maroons generally represent a strong desire to be free and independent on the part of African Americans. These are characteristics that were not always attributed to African Americans.
In order to understand this, let us first look at who maroons were. These were African Americans who escaped from slavery and then went and lived in communities with others in their same situation. In the US, these maroons sometimes lived with Native Americans.
The creation of maroon communities was important in US history because it shows how tenaciously African Americans pursued freedom and independence. In US history, African Americans have often been portrayed as passive people who were simply acted upon by whites. They were not given credit for being able to act on their own. The maroons show that this attitude is not correct. They show that African Americans were willing to take daring actions to secure their freedom and were eager to live in communities in which they were free.
Therefore, maroons are important in African American history as symbols of black determination and agency.
