In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, Winston is intrigued by a girl he sees outside of a junk shop. Like Winston, Julia works in the Ministry of Truth. She operates machines in the Fiction Department. Outwardly she pretends to zealously support the Junior Anti-Sex League, and she even wears an anti-sex sash. These are not her true feelings, however. In reality she is very passionate and she instigates the affair with Winston. Through her character and their relationship the true extent of the Party's reach is revealed. Earlier Julia believed the Party could not control a person's feelings, but it is ultimately able to erase the love she and Winston once felt for each other.
