The cons of granting rights to animals (depending on how far you take it) are that we get less food and fewer scientific breakthroughs.
If you give rights to animals, we can certainly no longer eat them. It may even become improper (depending on who you ask) to eat animal products such as milk, cheese, and eggs. If this is the case, granting rights to animals would deprive us of a major source of food.
In addition, it would surely no longer be possible to experiment on animals. Some experiments on animals are vital to our health. We would no longer be able to do things like testing vaccines on animals or using animals to determine whether new chemicals are carcinogenic. In these ways, granting rights to animals could seriously reduce our quality of life.
