The connection between Emerson and Whitman is most strongly expressed in Whitman's first section of his "Song of Myself", "...I permit to speak at every hazard, Nature without check with original energy". Emerson's strongest theme throughout Self Reliance is the idea of complete self expression. In this quote, Whitman is idealizing Emerson's views of self expression by "permitting" and admiring the truth of self. This is certainly the strongest connection between Whitman and Emerson as Whitman expresses and supports the core of Emersonian self expression.
