what are charges? I don't want the book definition, just in simple words.

Charges are particles that carry an electrical charge, positive or negative, such that: electrons carry a negative electrical charge, protons carry a positive electrical charge.
The opposite charges attract each other, hence, if a positive electrical charge is put near a negative electrical charge, the electrical field that surrounds each charged particle will travel from positive charge to negative charge.
There exists also atoms that can have an excess of electrons or an electrons deficit and they are also called charges.
Hence, the electric charge is the property of the matter and charges are sub-atomic charged particles or ions that are atoms whose numbers of charged sub-atomic particles are unequal.
