In the book "The Mosquito Coast" Alli, the father, is a brilliant man who sees civilization and the wheel that turns it as evil. He takes his family away from a normal American life into the wilderness. His mother does not want the same lifestyle but she is very dependent on Alli, both financially and emotionally. She fusses about things but never has the real courage to stand up to him eve if it is at the welfare of her own children. The boys beg their mother to leave and take them to someplace safe. Her focus is on herself and how she could not do things without their father. She has more concern for her own needs than she does those of her children. Allie is almost god like in her need for him.
