Baldeo,a tribal, works as a khalasi at a small wayside signal stop ,surrounded by a dense jungle.Baldeo was a watchman at a small station. He was responsible for signalling whether or not the tunnel was clear of obstruction, at night it was his duty to see that the lamp was burning, and that the overland mail passed through safely. He is an extremely brave and audacious person. He fights bravely ,wounding the tiger with his axe twice. But he was a little unfortunate.the tiger in the end tears his body andd puts an end to the life of poor but valiant baldeo.

Baldeo is a tribal. He owned some small rice fields but they were not enough to support his family. So he considered himself to be lucky to have got the job of khalasi at the station. He was very good at killing wild animals with his axe. He was also very brave. He cared for his family. He has a sense of duty too. After lighting the lamp he could have gone back, but he did not do so.

Baldeo the watchman was responsible for signaling whether or not the tunnel was clear of obstruction, at night it was his duty to see that the lamp was burning, and that the overland mail passed through safely. Tembu, the boy lay in the station. They lived in a small tribal village on the outskirts of the forest, about three miles from the station. Their small rice fields did not provide them with more than a bare living, and Baldeo considered himself lucky to have got the job of Khalasi at this small wayside signal stop.
