A bomb threat analysis is a carefully researched study of the probability of future bomb threats, utilizing data on past such incidences and incorporating histories of how various localities responded to bomb threats.  Researchers compile data on past bomb threats in order to attempt to detect patterns that might help to prevent future such occurrences and to better prepare schools, businesses, entertainment facilities such as movie theaters, and other locales that may be targeted for bomb threats.  In addition to identifying patterns that might be useful in predicting future bomb threats, the analyses help to illuminate vulnerabilities and shortcomings in how various entities prepare for the potentiality of violence.  Analyses often include charts and tables illustrating the aforementioned patterns, for example, months of the year when bomb threats are most common, types of establishments most frequently targeted, and districts or communities where threats are more likely to occur.

Once probable targets are identified on the basis of statistical analysis, those particular locations or businesses are approached by law enforcement with recommendations on how to protect against explosives, and how to prepare in the event an explosion occurs.  Recommendations might include suggestions on how to organize an office for an emergency – a process somewhat akin to routine fire prevention and response planning – and training of staff for crisis response skills.  Staff are instructed on how to respond to a bomb threat in terms of reporting and evacuation procedures, and on how to respond to a suspicious package in the event one is discovered in the context of a bomb threat.

A bomb threat analysis is a plan for how to act in the event of a threat.  The central concern is safely and efficiently evacuating all personnel from the building against which the threat was posed.  They only work, however, when taken seriously.
