The SAT has three sections and three scores, each on a scale of 200 to 800. Writing (200-800) Math (200-800) and Critical Reading (200-800). According to http://collegeapps.about.com, "The average total score is approximately 1,538 points (520 in Math, 510 in Writing, and 508 in Critical Reasoning)."  An average score is acceptable for most colleges and universities. However, some of the top schools will expect you to achieve an SAT score of 2,100 of more. A score above 2,100 puts you in the 90th percentile, meaning that you scored better on the test than 90% of test takers. So what is a good ACT score? The exam consists of four parts: English Language, Reading, Mathematics and Science. Each category receives a score between 1 (lowest) and 36 (highest). Those four scores are then averaged to generate the composite score used by most colleges. The average composite score is roughly a 20. That is, about 50% of test-takers score below a 20.  “Very few students get a perfect ACT score, even those who get into the country's top colleges. In fact, anyone scoring a 34, 35 or 36 is among the top 1% of test-takers in the country.”
