One of the aspects Meursault found difficult about prison life was the impulses to do normal things: "my habit of thinking like a free man." Meursault would suddenly have a poignant desire to do something on a whim of free will, like going to the beach, then realize the confinement and loss of freedom.
I would suddenly be seized with a desire to go down to the beach for a swim.
