Aristotle is considered one of the most important contributors to metaphysics and his work on the topic, oddly enough titled "metaphysics" is still considered perhaps the most important work on the topic, though it is not easy to understand.

Metaphysics, according to Aristotle, is the investigation of the underlying causes or purposes of things, the things that underly all other concepts.  In order to examine them, Aristotle goes through the various steps that he feels are important in building an understanding of metaphysics.
