Anne of Green Gables was written by Lucy Maud Montgomery, a Canadian who lived on Prince Edward Island. Published in 1908, the novel tells the story of redheaded Anne Shirley, an imaginative 11 year old who comes from an orphanage to live on a farm on Prince Edward Island. The owners of the farm are unmarried brother and sister Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged couple who initially hope to adopt a boy to help them with the farm work. Instead, they end up with Anne, who hates her name, freckles and red hair.

The novel details Anne's life on the farm, her relationship with Matthew and Marilla, her many friendships, and her burgeoning educational successes.  Over the century since its publication, Anne of Green Gabes has become one of the most popular children's novels in the world.

Situated in New England in the 1900s, this is a story about an orphan who is taken into a foster family who expected  a boy instead. They are at first disappointed since they needed help with manual work around the farm, but red-headed Anne soon wins their hearts. Besides her natural charm, Anne has a definite gift in literature and the arts and pursues her studies with distinction. Of course, there is romance too in this story, but events don't follow in the way you would suppose (until the end!).

'Anne of Green Gables' is a delightful coming of age story observant of current social and moral trends of the time, particularly concerning the changing role of women in the home and on the work force. I read it in almost one sitting, so get comfy before you start - you won't want to put it down....

M atthew and Marilla Cuthbert are unmarried siblings who live on their ancestral farm, Green Gables, in the quiet town of Avonlea in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Matthew is sixty, and since he is getting too old to handle the farm work on his own, the Cuthberts decide to adopt an orphan boy to help him. This decision shocks the town gossip, Mrs. Rachel Lynde, who does not think Matthew and Marilla fit to raise a child.
