Acrylic is an acrylic resin which is a polymer of acrylic resin.

Due to its "quickly drying"  property, acrylic paints are prefered instead of oil paints, in some painting techniques. Besides, unlike oil paints, acrylic paints are resistent in time because they don't oxidize, so their colour nuances don't change.

After drying, acrylic paints cannot be removed by water.

Acrylic, in its basic form, is composed of hydrocarbons (carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen atoms) and like most hydrocarbons used in industry, is derived from oil.  These hydrocarbons, through various chemical processes, are in its most basic form arranged into a long chain of repeating units, otherwise known as a polymer. Acrylic can be manufactured into paints, lacquers, and Plexiglass, to name just a few products.  See link below for more chemical formulas-

i just wanted to add a post in response to "enotechris"'s answer. although it is a great description, hydrocarbons are only made from hydrogen and carbon atoms - no oxygen is present.

Acrylic plastic refers to a Family of synthetic, or man-made, plastic materials containing one or more derivatives of acrylic acid. Acrylic plastics are polymers. A polymer is a material made up of many molecules, or parts, linked together to form chain. Acrylic plastics are available in three forms: flat sheets, elongated shapes (rods and tubes), and moulding powder. Moulding powders are sometimes made by a process known as suspension polymerization in which the reaction takes place between tiny droplets of the monomer suspended in a solution of water and catalyst. This results in grains of polymer with tightly controlled molecular weight suitable for moulding or extrusion.

Acrylic paint is made from a base that is a liquid polymer plastic. The acrylic polymer plastic itself is a large molecule of repetitious groups of yet smaller molecules.(You did ask what acrylic is made from but I"ll guess you meant acrylic paint),In the base of this liquid plastic is finely milled pigment powders.

Acrylic paints are made from a combination of ground pigment and acrylic polymer. When acrylic paints dry they actually form a plastic film

Acrylic is an acrylic resin which is a polymer (long chains) of acrylic resin and because of its quick drying property, acrylic paints are prefered to other paints. it also gives a glossy finishing touch sometimes according to the surface.

I took an art history class my spring semester of my freshman year of college and my professor went in depth of the different types of paint and what we paint was made out of. From what I recall, acrylic paint is made from plastic or an acrylic polymer emulsion.
